The Unfinished-Book Club

Welcome to The Unfinished-Book Club—where messy drafts, fleeting ideas, and unpolished prose are nothing to be ashamed of.

Here, you’ll find musings on writing, the creative process, and a lot of real-talk about what it’s like to write with ADHD.

I’m Kirsten Donaghey, your ADHD writing coach, and I’ve been where you are. I know that you hate-on yourself because you just can’t seem to finish the book that you were so excited about. Does this resonate? Staring at a half-finished manuscript, wondering how to put all the randomly written pieces together. Writing a few sentences, only to get distracted by the next shiny idea, or worse—getting stuck in the perfectionism spiral and editing and editing and editing because it just doesn’t feel right, and you don’t want to send something out into the world only to not measure up, again.

In The Unfinished-Book Club we’re about more than just “finishing” our books. We’re about exploring the beautiful chaos of being a late-diagnosed ADHDer, and writer, finding our own rhythm instead of searching for strategies to become consistent (enough already with the neurotypical preaching about consistency -  if we could ‘just get our butt in the chair everyday and keep it there', we would! Nothing is more boring, and unlikely, for the ADHD brain that having to do something for the sake of consistency).

Instead, let’s discover how to let the sometimes messiness of life feed our creativity. Let’s tell ourselves, and really truly believe it, that there are other ways to write a book that work with our brain as opposed to against it.  Whether you're struggling to start or you’re dealing with the pressure of feeling like a failure because you haven’t finished, or you've lost interest, or feel overwhelmed, this community is for you.

I invite you to embrace the unfinished, to step into the space where progress is celebrated and the journey is just as important as the destination. You’ll get insights into managing ADHD and writing, tips for keeping the creative flow going, as well as what inspires me to keep writing.

Oh, and in case you were wondering—I'm working on a book too. It's called, A Novel Approach: Strategies for Writers with ADHD. It's due out in June 2025.

So if you’re ready to get to work, but without the shame or overwhelm, grab your coffee and let's get started.
